Jobs and Skills Australia puts median full-time employee pay for psychologists and psychotherapists at $2,204 a week and $60 an hour — about $114,600 a year if you multiply the weekly median by 52. Half of the surveyed employees earned more, half less. That is not the salary of every provisional psychologist on a hospital internship, and it is not what a solo practice owner banks after rent and indemnity.
Victoria University’s September 2025 summary of SEEK job ads puts a national average advertised salary near $105,000, with Tasmania at $115,000 and the Northern Territory at $95,000 on the same basis. Job ads skew toward permanent roles employers are struggling to fill. They under-count sessional contractors, academics, and clinicians who bill Medicare in their own company.
This page is the national labour-market view under healthcare salaries. It is not a state health department award (compare QLD nurse pay for that pattern) and not APS pay under federal classifications. For hospital doctors, see doctor salary Australia.

What employees actually earn (national medians)
The cleanest government-backed checkpoint is the Psychologists and Psychotherapists occupation profile on Jobs and Skills Australia. Median full-time earnings are $2,204 per week; median hourly earnings are $60. Source: ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours (EEH), May 2025, customised report.
JSA also notes that only 50% of workers in this ANZSCO group work full-time hours, versus 69% across all occupations. Average full-time hours are 42 per week for psychologists versus 44 for all occupations. Part-time clinicians pull weekly medians down when people annualise without checking hours.
JSA states ANZSCO-based occupation earnings will not be updated again; OSCA-based profiles are planned from mid-2026. Treat the May 2025 medians as a dated employee snapshot, not a live award.
Psychologist vs clinical psychologist pay
In Australia, “psychologist” is a protected title under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law. General registration lets you practise within your training scope. Clinical psychology is an area of practice endorsement — extra supervised practice and a registrar program — not a separate job title on every payslip.
Jobs and Skills Australia publishes a Clinical Psychologists (ANZSCO 272311) profile. Median weekly and hourly employee earnings are not published (shown as N/A) because sample sizes are too small for a reliable median. This page does not invent a clinical psychologist median.
Job boards still show a pay gap in ads. SEEK’s national psychologist salary page and employer-disclosed ranges often sit close to the broader $105,000 SEEK average cited by Victoria University. Indeed’s self-reported clinical psychologist average was about $116,158 a year in Australia (925 salaries, updated May 2025) — a different method, a different sample, not comparable to the ABS employee median without context.
Employers pay for scope and risk. Hospital acute teams, forensic services, and complex NDIS behaviour support roles often specify endorsement or equivalent experience. A general registration psychologist in a regional community health centre can still earn more than a metropolitan clinician if the location loading is high — registration type is not the only variable.
Salary by career stage
Provisional psychologists — still completing supervised practice — are often paid as trainees or early-career employees on structured programs. Those packages sit below the $2,204 employee median until full registration. Public sector graduate programs sometimes publish explicit bands; private clinics may pay a lower base plus billable-hour targets.
Early-career fully registered psychologists in employee roles commonly land in the SEEK/VU $95,000–$110,000 advertised band depending on state and sector. That aligns with, but is not identical to, annualising the ABS employee median.
Senior clinicians, team leaders and professional leads in health services, universities or large NGOs add $15,000–$35,000 to base in many job ads, but titles vary (“senior psychologist”, “lead clinician”, “manager mental health”). Recruitment guides such as the HCA Healthcare Australia 2026 salary guide (mental health / psychology section) quote benchmark ranges for agency and locum markets — useful for contract negotiation, not a census of every employee.
Executive roles (state-wide clinical director, chief psychologist) can exceed $150,000 in public job ads. Those are management positions with small cohorts; they are not included in the ANZSCO 2723 employee median.
State and territory variation (job-ad averages)
Victoria University compiled average psychologist salaries by state from SEEK data, September 2025. These are advertised full-time salaries on SEEK, not ABS employee census data. SEEK itself notes that some ads include super and benefits while others do not.
The same article reports a national average near $105,000 on SEEK. State point estimates in its table: Tasmania $115,000, ACT $110,000, Victoria $108,000, Queensland and NSW $107,500 each, Western Australia $100,000, South Australia $97,500, Northern Territory $95,000.
Within states, VU highlights higher advertised averages in selected regional markets (for example Gippsland or Alice Springs in the article text). That pattern — metro base, regional premium — shows up in other allied health markets too, including occupational therapist and speech pathologist guides on this site.
Do not read the NT $95,000 SEEK average as “low pay for all NT psychologists”. Remote and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation roles can include allowances not visible in a single SEEK figure.

Public health, private clinics, NDIS and schools
State health departments pay psychologists on enterprise agreements alongside other allied health. Bands differ by state; this page does not quote a single public award figure because NSW, Victoria and Queensland each use different agreements. Check the relevant EA for your employer rather than a national average.
Private psychology clinics often pay a base salary plus a share of billings, or a contractor rate per session. Employee medians capture the salary component; they miss contractors paid per hour with no annual base.
NDIS behaviour support and therapeutic supports bill at regulated hourly caps (see NDIS pricing arrangements). A psychologist’s income still depends on utilisation, non-billable admin, and whether they are employed or self-employed. Compare with NDIS-facing allied health pay patterns on this site.
School psychologists are usually employed by state education departments or Catholic/independent systems. Pay often tracks teacher or allied-health award structures in that sector — again, not the ANZSCO 2723 median.
Forensic, sport and niche roles
Search demand exists for forensic, court, criminal and sport psychologist salaries (Semrush snapshot, October 2026 — treat volumes as historical, not verified live demand). Credible employee medians for those micro-specialties are not published on JSA’s ANZSCO 272311-style pages at national level.
Forensic and court-connected roles in Corrective Services or police psychology units usually appear as senior public sector jobs with explicit bands in the ad. Sport psychologists may mix employee work (institutes, clubs) with private clients. Quoting a single “forensic psychologist salary Australia” without the employer and jurisdiction would be misleading — this page leaves those figures out.
Neuropsychology, educational and organisational psychology sit in the same earnings bucket in ANZSCO 2723 unless you have employer-specific data.
Client fees are not your salary
The Australian Psychological Society publishes suggested private practice fees for 2026–2027. That document guides what psychologists may charge clients. It does not tell you what the clinician keeps.
A session fee of $280 (illustrative APS schedule level) might fund room hire, admin staff, software, professional indemnity, supervision, and unpaid report writing. Medicare rebates and private health gaps change the cash flow again. Solo practitioners often earn less than the $2,204 employee median in lean years, and more in busy years — employee medians simply do not capture that distribution.
If you are comparing an employee package to “going private”, model hours, cancellation rates, and leave without pay. The superannuation calculator helps on the employee SG side only.
Gross pay, super and tax
Employee packages are quoted gross. From 1 July 2025 the Super Guarantee is 12% on ordinary time earnings for most employees. A $105,000 base with no salary packaging has $12,600 of employer super if the whole amount is OTE — on top of base for most contracts.
Take-home pay depends on tax residency, HELP debt, Medicare levy, and any salary packaging. This page does not state a net figure because two people on the same $114,600 gross can have different deductions.
Provisional psychologists with HELP debt from six-year programs should read the HECS-HELP repayment guide alongside gross salary. Higher advertised clinical roles do not automatically mean lower HELP rates — repayment is driven by taxable income.
FAQs
What is the average psychologist salary in Australia?
Jobs and Skills Australia reports median full-time employee earnings of $2,204 a week for psychologists and psychotherapists (ABS EEH, May 2025). Victoria University’s September 2025 summary of SEEK ads puts a national average advertised salary near $105,000. Those measures answer different questions — employee medians versus job advertisements.
How much does a clinical psychologist earn in Australia?
Jobs and Skills Australia does not publish a reliable median weekly earning for ANZSCO 272311 clinical psychologists. Job-board averages (for example Indeed self-reported data near $116,000 in 2025) are not the same as ABS employee medians. Read the employer, location and whether the role is employee or contractor.
What is the psychologist hourly rate in Australia?
For employees, JSA reports a median of $60 an hour (ABS EEH, May 2025, ANZSCO 2723). Private session fees suggested by the Australian Psychological Society for 2026–2027 are client charges, not an employee wage.
Which state pays psychologists the most?
On SEEK advertised averages summarised by Victoria University in September 2025, Tasmania ($115,000) and the ACT ($110,000) ranked highest among the state point estimates, with the Northern Territory lowest ($95,000). Regional ads within states can exceed those averages.
Do forensic or sports psychologists earn more?
There is no national ABS median published for those titles alone. Pay depends on employer (corrections, police, clubs, private practice) and contract type. This page does not quote forensic or sport psychologist salary figures without a verifiable source.
Is psychologist pay the same in the public and private sector?
No. Public allied-health awards use increment bands; private clinics may pay base plus billings or contractor rates. The $2,204 weekly employee median blends sectors and does not separate them.
Sources and method
Award figures are copied from the named industrial instrument. Weekly Jobs and Skills Australia figures are median full-time employee earnings from ABS EEH May 2025, not award rates. Multiplying a weekly median by 52 is labelled as annualised and is only for comparison. Private-practice billings and owner drawings are not treated as salary.
