How the Calculator Works
This universal Penalty Rates Calculator uses a data-driven model to estimate shift earnings under the Fair Work system. It applies the core parameters set out in specific industry Modern Awards:
- Base Hourly Rate: The foundation wage for your classification. Effective 1 July 2026, the baseline National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour.
- Day Type Penalties: Extra loading percentages applied based on the shift day: Saturday (typically 125% or 150%), Sunday (typically 150%, 175% or 200%), and Public Holidays (225% or 250%).
- Shift Loadings: Specific time-based loadings for afternoon, evening, or night duty. The engine matches the hours you work against the award’s defined time bands (e.g. 15% loading for night duty).
- Casual Loading: Automatically adds the 25% casual loading rate for casual workers and calculates combined weekend and public holiday multipliers.
- Overtime Loadings: Calculates overtime portions (commonly 150% for the first two hours and 200% thereafter) for hours worked beyond ordinary shift schedules.
Who Can Use This Calculator?
Any employee, contractor, or business owner operating under the Fair Work framework can use this tool to cross-reference roster pay:
- Retail & Fast Food Workers: Calculate Saturday and Sunday loadings under the General Retail or Fast Food awards.
- Hospitality & Restaurant Staff: Estimate Sunday roster loading and late-night penalties under the Hospitality and Restaurant awards.
- Healthcare & Aged Care Staff: Calculate Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday rates for nurses, care workers, and health professionals.
- Security & Cleaning Guards: Check double-time weekend pay structures under the Cleaning and Security awards.
- Office & Administrative Clerks: Audit overtime and weekend penalty rates under the Clerks Award.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Retail Employee (Saturday Shift)
A permanent full-time retail assistant covered by the General Retail Award works a Saturday shift from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (8 hours, with a 30-minute unpaid break, resulting in 7.5 ordinary hours).
Hourly Rate: $28.00/hr.
Saturday Penalty: 125% of the base rate under the Retail Award.
Earnings: $28.00 × 1.25 × 7.5 = $262.50 (equivalent to $35.00/hr).
Example 2: Hospitality Worker (Sunday Shift)
A permanent part-time restaurant waiter covered by the Hospitality Award works a Sunday shift from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm (8 hours, with a 30-minute unpaid break, resulting in 7.5 ordinary hours).
Hourly Rate: $27.00/hr.
Sunday Penalty: 150% of the base rate under the Hospitality Award.
Earnings: $27.00 × 1.50 × 7.5 = $303.75 (equivalent to $40.50/hr).
Example 3: Nurse (Public Holiday Shift)
A permanent Registered Nurse covered by the Nurses Award works on Christmas Day (Public Holiday) from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm (8 hours, with a 30-minute unpaid break, resulting in 7.5 ordinary hours).
Hourly Rate: $45.00/hr.
Public Holiday Penalty: 250% under the Nurses Award.
Earnings: $45.00 × 2.50 × 7.5 = $843.75 (equivalent to $112.50/hr).
Example 4: Casual Employee (Night Shift)
A casual cleaner covered by the Cleaning Services Award works a weekday night shift from 8:00 pm to 4:00 am (8 hours, with a 30-minute unpaid break, resulting in 7.5 ordinary hours).
Hourly Rate: $26.44/hr.
Night Penalty (Casual): 140% (incorporating 25% casual loading and 15% shift loading).
Earnings: $26.44 × 1.40 × 7.5 = $277.62 (equivalent to $37.02/hr).
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this calculator?
The calculator provides a highly accurate estimate based on the standard multipliers specified in the selected Modern Award. However, it does not factor in company-specific Enterprise Agreements (EAs), custom roster clauses, or local allowances.
Does it use Fair Work Awards?
Yes. The calculator uses standard loading multipliers set out by the Fair Work Ombudsman for major awards, including Retail, Hospitality, Nurses, Fast Food, Cleaning, Security, and Restaurant awards.
Can casual employees use it?
Yes. By selecting “Casual” as the employment type, the calculator automatically applies the 25% casual loading and correctly handles casual weekend and public holiday multipliers.
Does it include overtime?
Yes. If you check the overtime checkbox, you can input the hours worked beyond your ordinary roster. The calculator applies the appropriate overtime penalty rate (typically 150% for the first two hours and 200% thereafter).
Does it calculate public holiday pay?
Yes. By selecting the “Public Holiday” day type, the calculator applies public holiday penalty rates, which typically range from 225% to 250% for permanent employees under common awards.
Can I use it for Sunday shifts?
Yes. When the selected shift date or day type is Sunday, the calculator applies Sunday penalty loadings (typically 150% to 200% depending on the award).
Can employers pay different rates?
Yes. Employers can negotiate Enterprise Agreements (EAs) or pay a flat rate, provided the total pay is at least as much as the employee would have received under the award, passing the Better Off Overall Test (BOOT).
Does it work for nurses?
Yes. Selecting the Nurses Award 2020 applies healthcare-specific rates, including 150% for Saturdays, 175% for Sundays, 250% for public holidays, and night shift loadings.
What is the 1 July 2026 National Minimum Wage?
Effective 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, representing a 4.75% increase from the previous financial year.
How do shift loadings affect weekday pay?
If you work outside standard daytime hours (e.g. afternoon or night shifts), awards apply an additional loading (e.g. 10% or 15%) to your ordinary hours.
Are breaks paid or unpaid?
Meal breaks are generally unpaid and excluded from total paid hours. Short rest breaks (e.g. 10-minute tea breaks) are paid and should not be subtracted.
Does it handle public holiday substitute days?
You should select the day type “Public Holiday” for the specific day you are rostered to receive holiday penalty rates under your award.
What is the weekend rate for casuals under the Retail Award?
Casual retail employees receive 150% of their base rate on Saturdays and 175% of their base rate on Sundays (inclusive of casual loading).
Do apprentices receive penalty rates?
Yes. Registered apprentices are entitled to the same weekend and shift penalty multipliers as other workers, applied to their specific apprentice base rate.
Do salaried workers get paid overtime?
Salaried workers generally do not receive separate overtime if their annual salary package is high enough to compensate for all hours worked under the award.
Is superannuation calculated on penalty rates?
Yes. Superannuation is paid on shift and weekend penalties that are part of your ordinary rostered hours. It is generally not paid on overtime.
Does the calculator support NDIS rates?
NDIS support worker rates are governed by the SCHADS Award. For SCHADS or other custom agreements, you can select the “General (Fallback)” option to approximate weekend pay.
What is double time and a half?
Double time and a half represents a multiplier of 250% (2.5 times) of your base hourly rate, which is the standard rate for public holiday shifts.
Can an employer pay a flat rate instead of Saturday loading?
Only if the flat rate is high enough to ensure the employee is not worse off overall than they would have been under the Modern Award (checked via the BOOT).
What should I do if I am underpaid?
Verify your pay slips and roster hours. You can contact your union or submit an inquiry to the Fair Work Ombudsman for assistance.
