Understanding the Childcare Subsidy in Australia

Finding a childcare subsidy calculator that is accurate is the first step in managing your family's budget. The Australian Government's Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is designed to help families with the cost of childcare, making it more affordable for parents to work, study, or volunteer.

Latest Centrelink Childcare Subsidy Changes

Significant centrelink childcare subsidy changes have been introduced recently to broaden eligibility. Starting in early 2026, the activity test was simplified with the "3-Day Guarantee," ensuring every eligible family receives at least 72 hours of subsidised care per fortnight. This change specifically helps low-income families and those with irregular work hours.

Current Childcare Subsidy Rates & Income Thresholds

Your childcare subsidy rates are primarily determined by your family's adjusted taxable income. Families earning up to $85,279 receive the maximum 90% subsidy. For every $5,000 earned above this threshold, the subsidy rate decreases by 1%, until it reaches 0% for families earning $535,279 or more.

Additional Child Care Subsidy (ACCS)

Beyond the standard CCS, some families may be eligible for the additional childcare subsidy. This provides extra support for grandparent carers, families transitioning to work, or those experiencing temporary financial hardship. In many cases, ACCS can cover up to 100% of the cost of childcare.

Childcare Subsidy Age & Eligibility

To be eligible, a child must be 13 years of age or under and not attending secondary school (unless exemptions apply). The childcare subsidy age rules ensure that support is targeted towards early childhood education and primary school-aged care.
