Healthcare Salaries in Australia

Medical practitioners

Interns, residents, registrars, staff specialists and GPs. Public hospital bases from NSW Health and Queensland Health, plus Jobs and Skills Australia employee earnings where they exist. Private billings and practice ownership are called out as a different dataset, not guessed as a national average.

Nursing and midwifery

Live pages here are Queensland Health EB11 scales. They are not a national nurse average. Other states are not linked until a verified page exists. Shift loadings have their own article because weekend and public-holiday percentages are not the same thing as a Grade 5 increment.

Allied health

National occupation guides already on the site. These are labour-market and award composites, not APS pay. NDIS contracting, hospital EAs and private clinics do not share one pay spine — each guide should say which market it is quoting.

Pharmacy and dental

Pharmacist, dentist and oral health therapist pages are not live yet. No placeholder links. Community pharmacy awards and dental practice drawings are different enough that a fake “average dentist salary” card would be worse than a blank.

Diagnostics and emergency care

Imaging and nuclear medicine sit next to radiation therapy. Emergency physician and paramedic award pages are not published here yet. Ambulance pay is a state instrument in the same way junior doctor pay is — it will not be linked until the award is in a data file.

About this directory

Hospital pay in Australia is still a state industrial instrument, not a national doctor award. A first-year intern in New South Wales sits on $80,638 from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2025. The same year of training in Queensland Health is $94,670. Those two numbers are award bases, not take-home, and they already tell you why a single “doctor salary Australia” figure is a bad starting point.

This hub is the national healthcare directory on AussieSalary. It groups medical practitioners, nursing, allied health, pharmacy and dental, and diagnostics. Live pages are the only links. Queensland nurse pay lives on existing QLD nurse salary routes because those pages are award-specific. Federal science and engineering pay stays under federal pay — different employer, different super, different industrial system.

If you are comparing a hospital contract to a private clinic or an NDIS role, read the scope badge on each card. National pages mix public awards and labour-market earnings. State pages quote one health department. Federal pages quote APS classifications. Mixing those three without a label is how people talk past each other in a job offer.

Cards marked “not live yet” have no URL. Pharmacist, dentist and paramedic pages are not invented to fill a grid. When those occupations ship, they will use the same nested salary URL pattern as doctor salary Australia.

Use the jump links below if you already know the occupation family. Medical practitioners currently means the doctor article: intern through staff specialist, plus Jobs and Skills Australia employee medians for GPs/RMOs, specialist physicians and surgeons. Nursing on this site is Queensland Health EB11, including registered, graduate and enrolled nurse pages, plus nurse penalty rates. Allied health is the existing national guides for occupational therapists, speech pathologists, radiation therapists and perfusionists. Diagnostics currently points to nuclear medicine technologists.

Figures on live pages should name the instrument, the effective date, and whether you are looking at an award base or a survey median. The doctor page uses NSW Health IB2026_007 and IB2026_006 (first full pay period on or after 1 July 2025), Queensland Health MOCA7 from 1 July 2025, and ABS Employee Earnings and Hours medians for May 2025 as republished by Jobs and Skills Australia. Super Guarantee is 12% from 1 July 2025 on ordinary time earnings for most employees. Model that on the superannuation calculator rather than adding 12% in your head on a package that already includes super.

FAQs

Is this the same as federal government salary pages?

No. This hub covers healthcare employment across hospitals, clinics and related occupations. Federal pages under /federal/ cover Australian Public Service classifications, agency enterprise agreements and 15.4% PSS super. A research scientist at CSIRO is not paid on a medical officer award.

Why are the nurse pages Queensland-only?

The live nurse salary articles on this site quote Queensland Health EB11. Other states use different awards. Linking those QLD pages as if they were a national nurse average would be misleading, so they carry a state badge.

What is a typical doctor salary in Australia?

There is no single typical figure. NSW Health pays an intern $80,638 a year (interim 3% increase, first full pay period on or after 1 July 2025). Queensland Health pays $94,670 for intern level L1 from 1 July 2025. Jobs and Skills Australia reports median full-time weekly earnings of $2,446 for the combined “general practitioners and resident medical officers” group (ABS EEH, May 2025). That group mixes GPs and RMOs.

Do private GPs earn more than hospital doctors?

Private billings and practice ownership sit outside public hospital awards. Employee earnings medians from Jobs and Skills Australia do not capture practice principals who are not employees. Compare an award base to a billing mix only if you know which one you are looking at.

Where should I look for take-home pay?

Start with the award base or the employee median, then apply tax, the Medicare levy, HELP if you have it, and 12% Super Guarantee from 1 July 2025. Hospital overtime is often larger than the increment between resident years. Use the superannuation calculator and the HECS-HELP guide rather than a single “net doctor salary” invented on this hub.

Will trades and education salary hubs live here too?

Later category hubs will sit under /salaries/ using the same templates. They are named on the salaries index without links until a page exists. Existing teacher guides stay on /guides/ for now. Federal engineering stays under /federal/engineering/.
